What is Speech Therapy?

Villa Children’s Therapy is proud to provide pediatric speech therapy to El Paso’s children. Pediatric speech therapy is an intervention service that focuses on improving a child's speech and abilities to understand and express language, including nonverbal language. Our talented and knowledgeable staff of speech therapists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide therapy to address:

  • Speech: Focuses on coordinating the mouth to produce sounds to form words and sentences, which addresses articulation, fluency, and voice volume regulation.

  • Language: Deals with aiding children through the understanding and expression of language. This encompasses the use of language through written, pictorial, body, and sign forms, and the use of language through alternative communication systems such as digital technology and computers.

Would Your Child Benefit From Speech Therapy?

There are many signs that your child may have a speech disorder; many of these signs vary by age. The following issues may indicate speech disorders for children of any age:

  • Stuttering voice (such as hoarseness, breathy quality)

  • Difficulty pronouncing words (family or others may have a hard time understanding your child)

  • Delayed speaking for their age

  • Social skills (interacting with others)

  • Difficulty solving problems or following directions

  • Feeding aversions (refusing to eat, picky eaters, transitioning from tube feeding)

  • Dyslexia

Speech Therapy for Toddlers at Home

When it comes to speech therapy, the earlier you take up intervention, the better. By partaking in speech therapy for toddlers at home, your child’s vocal and verbal development can flourish immensely. The benefits that can result from speech therapy include but are not limited to:

  • Understanding the meaning of words and how to use them

  • Developed communication skills to improve interactions with others

  • Improved expression of thoughts, ideas, and needs

  • Enhanced non-verbal communication skills such as facial expressions and body language

  • Being able to formulate and communicate statements and sentences that make sense

By initiating speech therapy for toddlers at home, we can help address the problems and allow your toddler to develop the skills and communication they need to become a more independent communicator.

What Age Should Your Child Start Speech Therapy?

Some children can talk a mile a minute while others may take their speech at a more relaxed pace. Because of this, it can be difficult to tell when your child may need speech therapy. Children can show signs as early as three months, so we’ve broken up the indicators for the need for speech therapy through the following timelines:

  • 0-3 months: Your child does not smile or take notice of others

  • 4-7 months: Child does not make “baby noises”

  • 7-12 months: Child cannot understand the words being spoken to them

  • 12-18 months: Child has difficulty pronouncing consonants “b”, “h”, “m”, “p”, and “w”

  • 18-24 months: Child has trouble comprising words into phrases

  • 24-36 months: Child has difficulty pronouncing consonants “d”, “f”, “g”, “k”, “n”, and “t”, has difficulty communicating with other children, and their speech is difficult to understand

Even though each child develops differently, it’s necessary for parents to pay attention if these signs recur. It is in your child’s best interest to have their signs checked and assessed by a speech pathologist.
